Hour Calculator

Time Calculator

Build a list of durations with plus and minus signs and see the result as hours, minutes and seconds, as decimal hours and as days and hours.

Type 2:30, 1:15:30, 7.75 or 2h 15m.

How to use the time calculator

  1. Enter the first duration. You can type 2:30 (hours and minutes), 1:02:03 (hours, minutes, seconds), 1.5 (decimal hours) or 2h 15m.
  2. Add more lines and choose + or - for each one.
  3. The result shows as h:mm:ss, decimal hours, total minutes, total seconds, and days plus hours for long totals.

This tool adds durations, not clock times. To find the time between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM, use the hours calculator.

Examples

CalculationResult
3:45 + 2h 20m + 1.57:35:00 (7.58 hours)
5:10:30 - 2:45:502:24:40
12:00 - 0:45 - 0:3010:45:00
30:00 + 20:3050:30:00 (2 days 2.5 hours)
0:45 + 0:50 + 0:402:15:00

A bare number such as 1.5 is read as decimal hours, so it means 1 hour 30 minutes. Use 1:05 or 1h 5m for one hour and five minutes.

Typical uses

  • Adding the daily hours from a paper timesheet into a weekly total.
  • Subtracting break time from a long shift: 12:00 minus 0:45 and 0:30 leaves 10:45.
  • Adding track lengths, video clips or task estimates.
  • Turning a total into decimals for payroll. For a conversion chart, see the time clock calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes?

Add the minutes first. If they reach 60 or more, carry the extra hour. For example, 3:45 + 2:20 is 5 hours 65 minutes, which is 6:05. The calculator does the carrying for you.

How do I subtract time?

Choose the minus sign for the duration you want to take away. 8:30 minus 0:45 gives 7:45. If the result is negative, it is shown with a minus sign.

What is 7 hours 45 minutes in decimal?

7.75 hours, because 45 / 60 = 0.75.

What does 1.75 hours mean in hours and minutes?

1 hour 45 minutes. Multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.75 x 60 = 45.

Can I enter seconds?

Yes. Type h:mm:ss, such as 1:02:03, or use units such as 90s. The result is also given in total seconds.

Does this work with clock times like 9:00 AM?

No, it adds durations. For start and end times use the hours calculator, or the time card calculator for a full week.
